Will my Chromebook do that?

When the Digital Classroom teachers visited Alamo Heights last week, they saw teachers using some tools in the classroom and asked, "Will my Chromebook do that?" Let the cheering begin. Your Chromebook will...
  • allow your students to read and listen to books checked out through the public library using the Overdrive app. Users need to log into their public library accounts using their library card number and the phone number associated with their account. If your students need public library cards, you can get applications at the public library. The public librarians will send you the cards to distribute to your students: Dianna Landes at Lakehills Area Library and Mike Garr at Bandera Public Library. (Parent signatures required.)
  • cast your students' screens to your projector using Google Cast.  (I haven't used this tool since it was in beta a couple of years ago, and the reviews say that there were some issues when Chrome updated in December. If it's something you want to try in your room, let me know, and we can try it together.)
  • allow your students to set a timer to manage their activities. There are a couple of timer extensions in the Chrome Web Store, but students can simply type: timer: 5 minutes into the Google omnibox (search bar), and the first search result is a timer. Looking for a timer for the whole class? Activate the timer on Classroomscreen.

Quizlet Live

The elementary Digital Classroom teachers visited a Spanish immersion classroom at Alamo Heights where the students were reviewing science concepts using Quizlet Live. The engagement and collaboration were amazing to behold. As an ELA teacher, I used Quizlet frequently to provide study opportunities for my students, but I had not seen the Quizlet Live feature in action. I'm hooked! Check out the video below for an overview.

Digital Learning Spotlight

Our students often need coaching in providing constructive feedback to each other. Whether you are using pinup.com, Padlet, a Google doc, or paper sticky notes, this video models supporting  students for a flipped lesson or station rotation. #bestpractice

Next week is TCEA in San Antonio. Next Tuesday Tech Tip will be February 12, 2019.
