#TellingOurStory, Google Calendar, Blended Learning Spotlight

#TellingOurStory

What a difference six months makes! In August we were talking about setting up social media accounts for our campuses, our organizations, and ourselves. And today if you search Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook, you can see the awesome things that are going on in BISD.

To help out the people who are managing the campus accounts, please tag that campus if you are posting about something awesome in your classroom or for your organization. (example @BanderaMiddle or @HCEBulldogs). That way your post will show up in their feed and they can share it.

Last week I heard an administrator share that she was so excited to find that you can search hashtags to connect with others. (ie #1stgrade #middleschoolscience #blendedlearning). Another way to locate people to follow is to simply do a Google search. (ie. top people to follow for social studies teachers, or top people to follow for math teachers.) You'll get a big list. Select one or two to follow. Pretty soon your virtual PLC will become an amazing resource. Last week when we got the email from Remind about their service changes, the first thing I did was email Richard Byrne from FreeTechnologyForTeachers. He responded within two hours, and I had information from an expert in the educational technology field. How amazing is that?

Google Calendar

Did you know that you can hide Google calendars that you subscribe to? Whether you are on a computer or a mobile device, you can check or uncheck calendars to make them visible or hide them. For example, if you subscribe to BISD's calendar or your campus calendar, you may only want to see those events some of the time. Simply uncheck the calendar in the Calendars list. You're still subscribed. You just don't have to look at the events all the time. Ahhh. Relief from calendar overload!

Want to subscribe to someone's calendar? Click HERE for a cheat sheet or HERE for Google's support page that includes instructions for IOS, Android, and computer.

Blended Learning Spotlight

Chromebooks should be in the classrooms of the teachers awarded Digital Classrooms, and this week the teachers are participating in two days of professional development. Tuesday they'll be visiting Engaged Classrooms in Alamo Heights ISD, and Wednesday they'll be collaborating to harness the power of technology to allow more time for student-teacher interaction and to impact instruction and differentiation. Next month they'll be visiting Robertson Elementary in Round Rock ISD. That school, a recipient of a Raise Your Hand Texas grant, is in its third year of implementing blended learning.

Many of the Digital Classroom teachers are participating or will participate later this spring in the UTeach Blended Learning series, a 30-hour professional development opportunity that allows participants to explore blended learning models and to create activities to implement blended learning in their classrooms. This spring ask the Digital Classroom teachers about what they're doing/seeing/learning.

It's an exciting time to be teaching and learning in BISD.

Chromebooks; Google Calendar; Blabberize

Great resources for Chromebooks in elementary

Kathy Schrock's Guide to Everything website has a great list of resources for using Chromebooks in the Classroom. (Schrock is a frequent conference presenter on educational technology resources.) Among the many resources is a Google Slide presentation on using Chromebooks in the elementary classroom to inspire and differentiate in language arts, math, science and social studies. Embedded in the slides are links to tutorials on teaching our youngest students to use Chromebooks and lots of great websites to enable our students to read, explore, create and learn.

Changes to Google Calendar

If you are a Google Calendar user, you may have noticed that your calendar looks a little different. Here's a quick three-minute overview to help you in navigating the new interface. If you are thinking about using Google Calendar in 2018, this video is a great place to start.

Blabberize

Looking for a fun way for your students to demonstrate learning? Blabberize may be just the tool. Students upload a picture, use the tools on the site to outline a mouth, and record sound. Imagine a sedimentary rock explaining its provenance, George Washington telling the story of Valley Forge, or a character in a story explaining his/her motivation for acting in a particular way. The possibilities are endless!

Edivate Video Spotlight

https://edivate.com/#resources/videos/7665

Ah. The end of January. The fourth six weeks. Our first full week of school since sometime in December. Need a little inspiration? Edivate is chock-full of videos that can give us that shot in the arm we need to keep ourselves and our students motivated. HERE is a video showing primary students solving math word problems. You will need to log in to Edivate to access the video. Teach elementary math? Google Drawings is a great way for students to demonstrate learning.

Try Quizlet Live!

Quizlet introduced a new feature last week: Quizlet Live. If you already have a Study Set built in Quizlet, just click on the set, click on Live, and a game code will be generated. Share it with your students and let the fun begin. If you're new to Quizlet, it is an online platform that allows teachers (and students) to create learning tools (flashcards, games, practice tests, etc.) for FREE, although a premium account opens additional features. Quizlet works on any browser and any device. Quizlet apps are available for IOS and Android.

Student Emails

While even our youngest students have the concept of texting down, our older students may need some encouragement to use their Gmail accounts to support their learning. BISD students can't email other students, but they can email their teachers to ask homework questions, request make up work, or notify a teacher of an emergency situation. Encouraging our students to use email to support their learning gives us opportunities to teach digital citizenship. (Thanks, Ms. Bagwell, for allowing me to use the Educreations video you made for your students. Educreations is a whiteboard and screencasting app available on IOS.)

TeachingBooks.net

TeachingBooks.net is a database that is available to BISD through our Texquest subscription. Get your campus's login info from your librarian. TeachingBooks.net is a robust resource for teachers that includes author interviews, supplemental materials, links to author websites, lesson plans, and much more. You can search by title, author, award list, grade level, reading level, curricular area, or genre. Whether you're looking for a new book to teach in class or your looking for supporting material for a book you're already teaching, TeachingBooks.net is a great place to start.

Subscribing to a Google Calendar

In case you missed this in the Tech Integration classroom last week, here's a short video on how to subscribe to a Google Calendar.
